Kohl's is a good fit if you buy US apparel, kids' clothing and home basics and are happy to pair Kohl's Rewards with a Kohl's Cash earn period. Prices on its house labels are genuinely low. The detail worth knowing first: percent-off codes usually exclude Nike, Levi's, Dyson and Sephora at Kohl's.
This is a compiled review: we have not shopped a Kohl's order ourselves for it. It draws on 13 sources checked between 27 September and 29 October 2026, in four groups.
Those groups are Kohl's own FAQ, policy and sale pages; a crawl of kohls.com that recorded live price points and verified-buyer ratings on individual products; retailer-level review aggregates at Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau; and retail and deal editorial guides from DealNews, The Krazy Coupon Lady, CouponCabin and Rather-Be-Shopping. Every price, window and percentage below comes from one of those, and we say which.
What Kohl's actually sells
Kohl's is a US mid-market department store chain, headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, trading online and through more than 1,100 stores in 49 states according to its corporate newsroom. It ships inside the United States only.
The catalogue runs across women's, men's, kids' and baby clothing, shoes, home and pet, bedding and bath, toys, jewellery, handbags, sports-fan gear and beauty. Much of the value sits in its own labels, which is where the lowest prices live: Tek Gear for activewear, SO for juniors, Jumping Beans for younger kids, Savile Row for men's shirting, Ellos in plus sizes and Mingle & Co. for table linen. National names sit alongside them, including Nike, Levi's, Carter's, Champion, New Era and Vanity Fair.
Two shop-in-shops matter to how people use it. Sephora at Kohl's has finished rolling out to more than 1,100 stores and passed $1.4 billion in sales in the 2023 financial year, per Kohl's corporate reporting, and Babies R Us shops are being added to stores alongside the existing baby registry.
What the sources agree on
They agree on the shape of the offer: wide range, aggressive markdowns on house labels, generous returns, and a loyalty scheme that rewards people who plan their timing. Where they split is on service, and the table shows the spread rather than averaging it away.
| Source | What it measures | Reading | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kohl's FAQ and policy pages | Stated returns, shipping, price adjustment | 90 days to return, 120 with a Kohl's Card; free shipping at $49 | Oct 2026 |
| Verified-buyer ratings on kohls.com product pages | Individual items people bought | 4.1 to 4.9 out of 5 across the products we sampled | Sep 2026 |
| Trustpilot | Unprompted reviews of the retailer | 1.5 out of 5 from 3,832 reviews | Oct 2026 |
| BBB customer reviews | Unprompted reviews of the retailer | 1.03 out of 5 from 363 reviews | Oct 2026 |
| Deal editors (DealNews, The Krazy Coupon Lady, CouponCabin) | How the discounts combine in practice | Favourable, with rules to learn first | Oct 2026 |
| Shopper forums (City-Data, Quora) | Perceived apparel quality | A step above Target; Macy's preferred for designer labels | Oct 2026 |
Why the star ratings disagree
The gap between a 1.5 rating for the company and 4-plus ratings on its products is not a contradiction, it is two different questions. Trustpilot and the BBB collect reviews of the company from people who went looking for a place to post, which in retail is mostly people resolving an order or a refund.
Product pages collect ratings from the much larger group who simply bought something. In the sample we pulled from kohls.com in September, a Tek Gear Ultrastretch sports bra sat at 4.1 from 879 ratings, an SO Core zip-up hoodie at 4.4 from 237, a Savile Row poplin dress shirt at 4.4 from 76, and Carter's DreamPlush footed pyjamas at 4.7 from 269.
Read together, the honest conclusion is that the merchandise satisfies most buyers and the contact-the-retailer experience is the weak link. Plan the order so you do not need to call: check sizing, confirm the coupon terms, and choose store pickup when the timing matters.
What works well, and what to check
What works well
- Real entry prices, taken from Kohl's own sale pages: tees from $7.99 against a $8.99 to $24.99 regular range, jeans from $19.99 against $29.99 to $34.99, fleece from $15.99 and a standing $10-and-under rail.
- Kohl's Rewards gives 5% back on every purchase, free to join, without needing the store card.
- Returns are unusually easy for the price bracket: 90 days as standard, 120 for Kohl's Card purchases, and a 14-day price adjustment if the price drops after you buy.
- Free Amazon returns at nearly every store, with no box and no label needed, which saves a separate trip to a carrier.
- Verified buyers rate the own-label basics well, clustering between 4.1 and 4.9 on the products we sampled.
What to know before you buy
- Percent-off codes commonly exclude premium brands, Nike, Under Armour, Levi's, Dyson and Sephora at Kohl's among them, per the coupon terms deal editors track. Read the exclusions on the code before you build the basket.
- Dollar-off credit comes off before a percent-off code, so the percentage then applies to the reduced total. If you hold Kohl's Cash, the maths favours one larger basket over two small ones.
- Kohl's Cash converted from Rewards is valid for 30 days once it lands, so note the date it appears.
- Premium electronics and watches carry a 30-day window and need the original packaging and receipt, so keep both.
- Some guides still quote a 180-day return window. Kohl's own FAQ now lists 90 and 120 days, so confirm the window on the returns page rather than a third-party summary.
How the savings actually stack
Kohl's pricing rewards timing more than negotiation. There are four moving parts, and knowing the order they apply in is most of the skill.
| Saving | How it works | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Kohl's Rewards | 5% back on every purchase, free to join with the email on your account | Calculated after coupons and before shipping, fees and tax; gift cards do not earn. Balances post within about 48 hours |
| Kohl's Cash earn periods | Typically $10 for every $50 spent, during roughly 12 to 15 windows a year | Earned on the discounted total before tax and shipping, then spent in a later redemption window |
| Percent-off coupons | Cardholder codes are commonly 30% | Premium brands are usually excluded; the exclusion list changes with each promotion |
| Price adjustment | 14 days if Kohl's lowers the price after you buy | Original receipt required, and it covers Kohl's own pricing |
| Competitor price match | 14 days on an identical in-stock item at a direct competitor | Deal editors list Macy's, JCPenney, Target and Walmart as eligible; wholesale clubs and marketplace listings are not |
Rewards converts to Kohl's Cash in $5 increments on the first day of the following month for cardholders, and that credit is good for 30 days. Sephora at Kohl's sits outside the Kohl's Cash scheme and earns Rewards only.
The Kohl's Card adds the cardholder percent-off codes, a yearly anniversary offer and, in the retailer's own words on its card page, access to monthly free shipping events once you reach Most Valued Customer status by spending $600 at Kohl's in a calendar year. It is a store credit card, so the benefit only holds if you clear the balance each month. If you only want the current discounts, our Kohl's coupons page tracks what is live without any of that.
Shipping, pickup and returns
Free standard shipping starts at $49, and orders are generally processed within one business day. Standard delivery runs about 3 to 6 business days once shipped, with some guides reporting up to 8 in busy weeks.
Store pickup is the faster route and it is free: in-stock orders are usually ready in about two hours, which is why pickup is the better choice on a deadline. Same-day delivery is available on eligible items through Instacart and DoorDash, arriving by 8pm local time.
On returns, Kohl's FAQ lists 90 days for most purchases and 120 days when you pay with a Kohl's Card, with a 30-day window on premium electronics and watches. Holiday timing is more generous: Kohl's says purchases made between 4 October and 30 December 2026 can be returned through 31 January 2027, including premium electronics, watches, jewellery and mattresses.
Who Kohl's suits best
It fits:
- US families buying kids' and baby clothing in volume, where the own labels and the $10-and-under rail do the work.
- Shoppers restocking basics such as tees, fleece, jeans, towels and bedding, rather than hunting designer labels.
- Anyone who can time a purchase to a Kohl's Cash earn period and return a week later to spend the credit.
- People who want to return online orders in person, including Amazon parcels.
Consider an alternative if:
- You want designer or contemporary labels, where shoppers on retail forums consistently prefer Macy's.
- You are buying a single item at full price with no code, where the advantage over a marketplace largely disappears.
- You need next-day delivery as standard rather than a store visit.
- You are shopping from outside the United States, which Kohl's does not serve.
Three alternatives worth comparing
Target is the better one-stop trip when clothing is only part of the basket and groceries or household goods are the rest. Shoppers on retail forums generally place Target's apparel a notch below Kohl's on quality at similar prices.
Macy's is the pick for designer and contemporary brands, and the same forum threads rate its in-store service higher. Expect to pay more outside its clearance events.
Amazon wins on speed and breadth for a known item you can size confidently. It has nothing equivalent to stacking a percent-off code on top of a cash-back credit, so a planned Kohl's basket often lands lower.
Kohl's FAQ
Is Kohl's a legitimate store?
Yes. Kohl's is a publicly traded US department store chain based in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, operating more than 1,100 stores in 49 states as well as kohls.com. Its own product pages carry verified-buyer ratings, which sat between 4.1 and 4.9 out of 5 across the items we sampled.
How does Kohl's Cash work?
During an earn period you receive credit for spending, typically $10 for every $50, worked out on the discounted total before tax and shipping. You then spend it like a dollar-off coupon in a later redemption window. Rewards balances also convert to Kohl's Cash in $5 increments, valid 30 days from the day they appear.
What is Kohl's return policy?
Kohl's FAQ lists 90 days for most purchases and 120 days if you paid with a Kohl's Card, with 30 days on premium electronics and watches returned in their original packaging. Purchases from 4 October to 30 December 2026 can be returned through 31 January 2027.
Does Kohl's take Amazon returns?
Yes, free, at every Kohl's store except Anchorage, Alaska. Start the return in Amazon, pick the Kohl's drop-off, and show the QR code in store; no box or label is needed.
Do Kohl's coupons work on Nike?
Generally no. Percent-off codes typically exclude premium brands including Nike, Under Armour, Levi's and Dyson, and Sephora at Kohl's is excluded from Kohl's Cash as well. The excluded list is set per promotion, so check the terms on the code you hold.
Is the Kohl's Card worth it?
It makes sense if you shop there several times a year: it brings the cardholder percent-off codes, extends returns to 120 days, adds an anniversary offer and brings monthly free shipping events at Most Valued Customer status, reached at $600 of card spend in a calendar year. As a store credit card, the value depends on clearing the balance in full each month.
Bottom line
On the compiled evidence, Kohl's is a solid choice for US shoppers buying everyday apparel, kids' clothing and home basics, and a strong one if you time the purchase to an earn period and read the exclusions before checkout. Our 7.6 is a moderate-confidence estimate: the pricing, return and loyalty facts come straight from Kohl's own pages, while the service score rests on public review platforms that attract people with an order to resolve.
Start with store pickup or a low-value first order to see how it handles for you, then scale up once the timing clicks.
