VerdictWorth buying

SmartWings is a good buy for made-to-measure motorised shades that join Matter, HomeKit, Alexa or Z-Wave without a proprietary app. Independent testers score it 8/10 and above and call the motors near-silent. The catch is not price: custom shades are made to order, so they cannot be returned.

How we made this estimate

We did not install SmartWings shades ourselves, so nothing below is written as first-hand experience. This estimate is compiled from six named hands-on tests published between November 2023 and November 2025, from 1,042 verified-buyer ratings on Trustpilot, and from the merchant's own pricing, shipping, returns and warranty pages.

What we checked on 6 October 2026: eleven SmartWings collection pages for current entry prices, the shipping and delivery page for production and transit times, the return policy, the warranty page, and the live discount codes at checkout. Where a source is a single owner's account rather than a measured test, we say so.

What SmartWings actually sells

SmartWings is a direct-to-consumer window covering brand that makes motorised blinds and shades to your measurements and ships them worldwide. The catalogue is built around nine shade families: roller shades, cellular honeycomb shades, zebra shades, woven wood shades, Roman shades, dual shades, outdoor patio shades, motorised drapery, and specialty shapes for skylights, trapezoid and arched windows.

The part that separates it from most of the category is the motor menu. Rather than locking you into one radio, SmartWings sells the same shade with a Matter over Thread motor, a Zigbee motor, a Z-Wave 800 LR motor, a Bluetooth motor, or a Power-over-Ethernet motor the company describes as the first Matter over Ethernet shade motor. Those feed Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, Home Assistant, Hubitat and Homey.

There is no SmartWings app. Control runs through whichever ecosystem your motor speaks, plus a physical remote. For people already running Home Assistant or HomeKit that is a feature. For a first smart home purchase it is friction, and the test reports say as much.

Power is a separate choice: rechargeable battery over USB-C, an add-on solar panel, or mains-hardwired DC and AC motors for new builds and commercial jobs. Fabrics carry OEKO-TEX and GreenGuard certifications, and the woven wood line uses jute, bamboo, kenaf and ramie blends.

What you will actually pay

Every price below is the entry point for the smallest made-to-measure size in that collection, read directly from the SmartWings store on 6 October 2026. Your real quote moves with window size, fabric, motor and accessories.

Skylight and specialty shapes$399.00to $559.00
Motors, remotes and accessories$2.9029, motors from $84.90

Two outside numbers put that in context. TechRadar paid $424.95 for a custom-sized 60% blackout zebra shade in April 2025, against a $169.99 standard start price. MakeUseOf put its November 2023 test unit above $500 as configured and noted that choosing the Matter motor added $100 to the bill. Comparison guides place Lutron's Serena shades at roughly $500 to $800 a window, which is the band SmartWings undercuts.

The discount picture is unusual and worth knowing before you shop. Shades are cut after you order, so they are never marked down; the only standing markdown anywhere in the catalogue is the fabric swatch collection, where all 25 sample packs sit at exactly half price, from $3.50 for a single swatch. Savings on the shades themselves come from checkout codes instead, currently a flat-dollar sitewide code, a higher flat-dollar code above a $100 basket, a percentage code for first orders above $800, and a small sitewide percentage code with almost no minimum. Only one code applies per order, so the flat-dollar codes win on small baskets and the percentage code wins on large ones.

Shipping is genuinely free worldwide with no minimum, by UPS, FedEx or DHL Express, and the shipping page states that fees are included rather than collected on delivery. Payment can be split through Shop Pay Installments or Affirm, with a published rate range of 0% to 36% APR, so the headline 0% figure is the best case and not the quoted rate.

What testers agree on

The agreement across six independent tests is narrow but firm: the hardware is better than the price suggests, and the motors are quiet.

On noise, CNX Software measured the motor at roughly 40 to 50 decibels, about the level of ordinary conversation. SmartHomeScene described the motors as clearly well calibrated and effectively silent, and Gearbrain scored quiet operation 5 out of 5 alongside a 5 out of 5 for build quality.

On battery, the figures line up better than they usually do. SmartWings quotes about 600 up-and-down cycles per charge. MakeUseOf translated that to three to six months, SmartHomeScene reported up to six months, and TechRadar got over a month of daily sunrise and sunset automation before recharging. CNX Software watched an add-on solar panel lift a battery from 57% to 94% across a single cloudy, stormy week, and recorded a 3% drop over six full cycles.

On responsiveness, SmartHomeScene timed commands at roughly half a second, with about ten seconds for the new position to sync across other controllers. CNX Software paired the Matter shade to both Home Assistant and Apple HomeKit in under two minutes.

And on fit, which matters most for a made-to-measure product, verified buyers repeatedly report that shades arrived correctly sized and that defective items were replaced without charge.

Where the reviews split

The split is entirely about setup, and it is sharp. Gearbrain scored installation 3 out of 5 and remote setup 3.5 out of 5 on an otherwise excellent card, calling the manuals unclear for anyone new to smart home gear. MakeUseOf found the instructions left out basics like drill bit size, and discovered the Matter pairing QR code sits on top of the shade, which meant taking an already-mounted shade back down to scan it. TechRadar stripped the included screws during mounting and needed support help to finish HomeKit pairing.

Against that, SmartHomeScene called installation easy and praised the fact that the motors arrive pre-assembled and pre-calibrated. The honest reading is that the mechanical part is simple, often around twenty minutes per window, and the pairing and automation part is where people lose an afternoon.

Reliability at scale is the second unresolved point. Most owners describe stable operation, but the low Trustpilot ratings cluster around multi-shade installations. One owner running seventeen shades reported batteries lasting about two months and remotes losing their connection, with only a quarter of the shades holding reliable Alexa schedules. A commenter on SmartHomeScene similarly described needing regular resets in a multi-unit setup, and Gearbrain noted occasional Zigbee connectivity trouble. Nobody has published a controlled test of a large install, so treat this as a known risk rather than a measured defect.

What to check before you order

Custom shades are not returnable. The return policy gives 30 days from the shipping date, but only for standard, non-customised products that are unopened and in original packaging. Configure-to-order and personalised items cannot be returned or exchanged unless they arrive defective, and that covers nearly every made-to-measure shade. Opened accessories may carry a 15% restocking fee.

That single rule makes measuring the whole game. SmartWings publishes separate measuring guides for windows, doors and specialty shapes, and half-price fabric swatches exist precisely so you can check colour and openness before committing a few hundred dollars to a cut you cannot undo.

Four smaller things worth settling first:

  • Pick the radio deliberately. Motor choice is effectively permanent, so decide whether your home is a Matter over Thread, Zigbee or Z-Wave house before you order, not after.
  • Budget for a remote. On the solar outdoor shade CNX Software tested, upper and lower travel limits could only be set from the physical remote, not from an app, which made the remote a necessary purchase rather than an optional one.
  • Check the delivery maths. Production runs 1 to 5 business days for roller and zebra shades, 6 to 10 for cellular and woven wood, and 7 to 12 for skylight, trapezoid and arched shapes, on top of transit. Cellular shades are quoted at 12 to 18 business days door to door.
  • No PO Boxes, and oversized shades are US-only. UPS will not deliver to a PO Box, and select oversized shades ship by freight inside the United States only.

Make sure you are on smartwingshome.com. A separate business at smartwings.com carries a 1.5 out of 5 Trustpilot score and has nothing to do with the blinds brand, and several coupon sites mix the two up.

Support is a bright spot here. The published lines are a US toll-free number and a support email, and Trustpilot records that SmartWings has replied to 91% of its negative reviews, typically inside 24 hours. The warranty runs 3 years on motors and controls for craftsmanship defects, which is the right place to put the cover, though fabric and hardware sit outside it.

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Named hands-on tests converge on near-silent motors, with one measurement at 40 to 50 decibels
  • Widest motor choice in the direct-to-consumer category, including Matter over Thread, Z-Wave 800 LR and a Power-over-Ethernet Matter motor
  • Entry prices from $159.99 undercut the $500 to $800 a window that comparison guides quote for premium brands
  • Free worldwide shipping with no minimum and import fees stated as included
  • Verified buyers repeatedly report correct sizing and free replacement of faulty units
  • 3-year warranty on motors and controls, and a company that answers 91% of its negative reviews

Trade-offs

  • Made-to-measure shades cannot be returned, so a measuring error is yours to absorb
  • Installation documentation draws consistent criticism; two testers describe setup problems the manual did not cover
  • No SmartWings app, so you need a compatible hub or ecosystem to get remote and voice control
  • Owners of large multi-shade installs report connection drops and shorter battery life than single-shade testers see
  • Matter motors carry a price premium, reported at $100 by one tester
  • Motor protocol is fixed at order time, so switching ecosystems later means new motors

Who should buy, and who should not

Buy SmartWings if you already run Home Assistant, HomeKit, SmartThings or a Z-Wave hub and want custom-fit motorised shades without paying premium-brand prices. It also suits awkward windows, since skylight, trapezoid, arched, bay and sliding-door shades are standard catalogue items rather than special orders. Anyone wiring a new build or a commercial space gets a hardwired and PoE path most direct-to-consumer brands do not offer.

Look elsewhere if you are renting and cannot drill, if this is your first smart home device and you want a product that works out of the box with its own app, or if you are not confident measuring windows to the millimetre and want the safety net of a return. A whole-house order of a dozen or more shades is also worth staging in batches, given what large-install owners report.

Alternatives worth a look

  • Lutron Serena — the premium benchmark, with comparison guides citing multi-year battery life and quieter motors at roughly $500 to $800 a window. Prefer it when a professional installer is doing the work and you want the longest service life.
  • Yoolax — the closest direct-to-consumer rival, generally quoted in the $200 to $550 a window range. Prefer it if you want a similar custom-fit model with a slightly simpler buying journey.
  • Eve MotionBlinds retrofit motors — a motor-only route that keeps your existing blinds. Prefer it if your current shades fit well and you only want to add Matter or HomeKit control.
Is SmartWings a legitimate company?

Yes. SmartWings runs its own store at smartwingshome.com, holds a 4.6 out of 5 Trustpilot score across 1,042 ratings, publishes a US toll-free support number and email, and replies to 91% of its negative reviews. Note that a different business at smartwings.com, with a far lower score, is unrelated to the blinds brand.

Can you return SmartWings shades?

Only if they are standard, non-customised products, unopened and in original packaging, within 30 days of the shipping date. Made-to-measure and configure-to-order shades cannot be returned or exchanged unless they arrive defective, and opened accessories may carry a 15% restocking fee.

How long do SmartWings shades take to arrive?

Production is 1 to 5 business days for roller and zebra shades, 6 to 10 for cellular and woven wood, and 7 to 12 for skylight, trapezoid and arched shapes. Transit is added on top, and the company quotes 3 to 18 business days after the order leaves the warehouse. Cellular shades are listed at 12 to 18 business days in total.

Do SmartWings blinds work with Apple HomeKit?

Yes, if you choose a Matter over Thread motor and have a Thread border router such as a HomePod or Apple TV. CNX Software paired a Matter shade with Apple HomeKit and Home Assistant in under two minutes. The same motor line also covers Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, Hubitat and Homey.

How often do SmartWings shades need charging?

SmartWings quotes around 600 open-and-close cycles per charge. Hands-on tests report three to six months in normal use, and TechRadar got over a month of daily automated cycles before recharging. An optional solar panel can keep the battery topped up; CNX Software saw one climb from 57% to 94% over a cloudy week.

Does SmartWings ship outside the United States?

Yes. Shipping is free worldwide with no minimum, by UPS, FedEx or DHL Express, and the company states that fees are included at delivery. The exceptions are PO Boxes, which UPS does not serve, and select oversized shades that ship by freight inside the United States only.

Bottom line

On the compiled evidence, SmartWings is the best-value route into genuinely custom motorised shades, and our confidence in the hardware verdict is high: six independent tests and a thousand buyer ratings agree the motors are quiet and the build is solid. Our confidence on large installations is lower, because nobody has tested one properly.

Order it if you are comfortable measuring your own windows and already have a hub, and spend the few dollars on half-price swatches before you commit, because a custom shade is yours once it is cut. Current checkout codes include a flat-dollar sitewide saving and a first-order percentage discount above $800, and only one applies per order.
