The verdict

Try it first Talkpal gives intermediate and advanced learners unlimited AI conversation practice, and its long plans undercut every rival we priced. It is not built for absolute beginners. Start on the free plan or the 14-day trial, read your own checkout total, then commit.

How we made this estimate

Compiled from nine sources read between 22 February and 21 October 2026: Talkpal's own pricing, discount, education, business and help-centre pages; the App Store and Google Play listings; Trustpilot; tested write-ups from TestPrepInsight, Makeheadway and Lingopie; and Wikipedia for company background, where the entry carries maintenance flags and is best read as the company's own account. We did not use Talkpal ourselves, so every claim about how the app behaves is attributed to the buyers or the testers who reported it.

What Talkpal actually is

Talkpal is an AI conversation partner for language learners, sold as a subscription on the web, iOS and Android. You speak or type to an AI in the language you are learning, and it replies, corrects and scores you.

Wikipedia records a 2023 launch by founders David Gegechkori and Dimitri Dekanozishvili, and describes a privately held American company based in Wilmington, Delaware. The same entry puts it at more than six million learners across 180 countries as of November 2025; Talkpal's own homepage counter now reads “10,000,000+ Users”.

The practice is split into modes, and both testers we read count nine of them: chat, dialogue, roleplay, character, debate, call, photo, sentence and word. Makeheadway singles out the pronunciation scoring, which marks you at word level with a colour-coded system. That feedback loop, rather than any lesson plan, is what you are paying for.

What you will actually pay

Talkpal's pricing page, read on 10 October 2026, listed three Premium tiers above one permanent free tier.

PlanPer monthBilledTrial
BasicFreeNo card neededNot applicable
Premium 1 Month$19.99Monthly14 days free
Premium 12 Months$9.99$119.99 up front14 days free
Premium 24 Months$6.24$149.99 up front14 days free

The free Basic plan is not a trial. It runs indefinitely and covers basic chat, personalised learning, progress tracking and the pronunciation assessment tool, with a 10-minute daily practice limit.

Every Premium tier carries the same 14-day free trial, stamped on the page as “Try for $0.00 – No payment today. Cancel anytime”. The real saving is the term, not the tier: $6.24 against $19.99 is roughly 69% less per month, in exchange for paying $149.99 at once.

Talkpal also runs dedicated pages offering up to 60% off for university students, graduate students, international students, teachers, healthcare workers, cultural organisation members, and seniors aged 60 and over. Each asks you to confirm you qualify before the discount applies.

One detail worth settling before you pick a store: Talkpal's help centre shows the promotional code box at its web checkout, and codes cannot be applied to App Store or Google Play purchases. Subscribing inside the app means taking the in-app price with no code field.

What buyers and testers agree on

The rating pools are unusually large for an app this young, and they sit close together.

SourceVerdictChecked
App Store (US)4.7 / 5 from 3,713 ratingsOctober 2026
Google Play4.5 / 5 from 107,183 ratingsOctober 2026
Trustpilot4.5 / 5 from 2,440 reviews (70% five-star, 8% one-star)October 2026
TestPrepInsight9.0 / 10February 2026
MakeheadwayWorth it "for a specific kind of learner"2026
Lingopie (competitor's blog)Worth trying for intermediate learners of popular languages2026

The agreement is narrow but firm. Buyers credit the conversation practice with building speaking confidence, and both independent testers name intermediate and advanced learners as the fit. TestPrepInsight treats it as a supplement to a structured course rather than a replacement for one.

Worth noting that the Lingopie write-up sits on a competing product's blog, which is why we have labelled it. Its conclusion still lands in the same place as the others.

Why the price you see may differ

Three sources quoted prices and quoted three different sets. Talkpal's own page explains why, in a line printed under the plans: “Prices & currencies may vary depending on your location.”

  • Talkpal's pricing page, 10 October 2026: $19.99 monthly, $9.99 on 12 months, $6.24 on 24 months.
  • TestPrepInsight, February 2026: about $15 month-to-month, and $6 to $13 a month on the 3, 12 and 24-month plans.
  • Makeheadway: $6.99 monthly, $5.99 quarterly, and $3.49 a month on the annual plan, billed $41.99.

Treat any per-month figure, ours included, as an example rather than your price. Open the pricing page from the country you will pay from, and read the up-front total rather than the monthly equivalent.

The language count moves in the same way. Talkpal's homepage counter reads “130+ Languages available”, while Wikipedia and both testers put the figure at more than 57, which also matches the number of interface languages on Talkpal's own site. Coverage is uneven across them: several sources report thinner quality in less common languages, with Tagalog named by two.

Run your target language through the free plan's 10 minutes before you buy a year of it. That one session tells you more about coverage than any count on a homepage.

What works well and what to check

What works well

  • Nine practice modes, so one session can move from roleplay to debate to a phone-style call (TestPrepInsight, Makeheadway).
  • Word-level, colour-coded pronunciation scoring that gives immediate, specific feedback (Makeheadway).
  • Practice without an audience. Buyers on the App Store and Google Play repeatedly credit the judgment-free setting with building their confidence.
  • The cheapest unlimited AI conversation practice in the 2026 roundups we read. Even the long-plan rate on Talkpal's own page, $6.24 a month, undercuts Babbel's annual rate and is a fraction of Duolingo Max.
  • A permanent free plan and a 14-day Premium trial, neither of which takes a payment up front.

What to know before you buy

  • Grammar feedback is not always right. TestPrepInsight and buyer reviews both report occasional incorrect notes and missed pronunciation errors, so check any correction that surprises you.
  • There is no grammar syllabus. Both testers suggest running it alongside a structured course such as Babbel rather than instead of one.
  • The free plan stops at 10 minutes a day. That is enough to test a language and not enough to practise with daily.
  • Note your renewal date when you subscribe. Talkpal states you can cancel at any time and keep access to the end of the period, and it does not advertise money back once a trial converts; one Trustpilot one-star review describes being sent cancellation instructions instead of a refund on the renewal date.
  • Makeheadway reports no offline mode and no post-session feedback summary, so plan on practising with a connection and keeping your own notes.

Who Talkpal suits best

  • Intermediate and advanced learners who can read and conjugate but freeze when it is time to speak.
  • Busy professionals who want reps at odd hours without booking a tutor.
  • Polyglots and travellers who dip into several languages and want one subscription covering all of them.
  • Schools and teams. The education page offers a two-week Premium trial, an admin dashboard for inviting students whose existing free accounts upgrade automatically, and wire transfer for 100 accounts or more. Business and nonprofit pricing is quoted per organisation after a free consultation.

When another app fits better

Every independent source we read says the same thing about beginners, which is reason enough to take it seriously. If you cannot yet build a sentence, a structured course returns more per hour.

  • Babbel gives you a linguist-built curriculum with real-world scenarios, priced in 2026 roundups at around $8 a month on a 12-month term. Prefer it if you need grammar taught in order.
  • Duolingo Max pairs gamified lessons with AI conversation, listed at $29.99 a month or $168 a year in the US. Prefer it if a daily streak is what keeps you returning.
  • Speak is speaking-first, with Premium listed at $17.99 a month. Prefer it if you want one language covered thoroughly rather than many covered lightly.
Is Talkpal free to use?

In part. The Basic plan is permanently free and needs no card: basic chat, personalised learning, progress tracking and the pronunciation assessment tool, capped at 10 minutes of practice a day. Unlimited practice and the full set of AI modes sit behind Premium.

How much does Talkpal cost per month?

Talkpal's pricing page, read on 10 October 2026, listed $19.99 a month on monthly billing, $9.99 a month on the 12-month plan at $119.99 up front, and $6.24 a month on the 24-month plan at $149.99 up front. The page states that prices and currencies vary by location, and other sources have seen lower figures, so read your own checkout total.

Is Talkpal good for beginners?

Not on its own. TestPrepInsight, Makeheadway and Lingopie all describe it as built for intermediate and advanced speakers, with no structured grammar path for someone starting from zero. Beginners get more from a course first, adding Talkpal later for speaking practice.

Does Talkpal have a student discount?

Yes. Talkpal runs separate pages advertising up to 60% off for university students, graduate students and international students, each asking you to confirm you qualify. It runs equivalent pages for teachers, healthcare workers, cultural organisation members, and seniors aged 60 and over.

Can you cancel a Talkpal subscription?

Yes. Talkpal's pricing FAQ states: “Yes, you can cancel your Talkpal Premium subscription at any time. After the cancelation, the subscription will end at the end of the subscription period.” Cancelling inside the 14-day trial means no charge at all. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, cancel in that store's subscription settings instead.

How many languages does Talkpal support?

Talkpal's homepage counts “130+ Languages available”. Wikipedia and both independent testers put the figure at more than 57, which matches the number of interface languages on Talkpal's own site. Coverage is uneven, and several sources report weaker quality in less common languages, so test yours on the free plan first.

Bottom line

Our compiled estimate is 8.0 out of 10, held with reasonable confidence: the rating pools are large, and the two tested write-ups agree with each other and with the buyers. The confidence gap is price, which moves by country, and feedback accuracy, which only daily use would settle.

If you already have the grammar and need the speaking reps, Talkpal is the cheapest route to unlimited practice that we could find evidence for. Use the free plan to check your language, the 14-day trial to check how it feels, and the long plan only once both have passed.
